Every award has its own rules

A nomination places a film or a person among the contenders in a category; it is not the same as winning. It is also worth distinguishing recognition for a performance from an award for a film, its screenplay or a technical achievement.

For the Oscars, the Academy explains that voting takes place by secret electronic ballot. Specific rules can change from one year to the next, so the official source is the right place to check who votes and which requirements apply at the time.

Let the ceremony guide your viewing

Award categories can help us expand our watchlists. A nomination for sound or costume design offers a different lead from Best Picture and encourages us to notice aspects that often receive less attention.

Our suggestion: choose a category before the ceremony and discover one of its nominees without looking at predictions. That way, awards become a conversation about cinema, rather than just a competition that ends when the envelope is opened.
