There is more to it than songs

Sometimes we remember a film through a song we already knew; at other times, through an instrumental melody that seems to belong to that story alone. It helps to distinguish songs from the score composed to accompany the action, even though both may appear on a soundtrack album.

The Academy’s music rules distinguish an original score, written specifically for a film, from an original song, which includes music and lyrics. Here, we are interested in that creative distinction rather than the eligibility requirements for any particular awards year.

Listen for the difference

The next time you revisit a scene, listen for the moment the music begins. Does it arrive before a revelation? Does it continue while someone stays silent? These questions help us hear how sound shapes what we feel.

Then try listening to the album away from the film and compare the experience. The aim is not to guess a hidden intention, but to notice what the image adds and what the music retains when we leave it on its own.
