One film, many crafts

A director holds a creative vision together, but a film is never the work of one person alone. Screenwriting, cinematography, production design, costume and editing each bring their own decisions to the screen. The credits recognise that shared work and introduce us to names we may want to follow.

ScreenSkills brings together profiles of these roles and explains how they connect during a production. There is no need to memorise every department: starting with two or three roles can help us understand which part of a scene caught our attention.

Watch with a question in mind

If a film’s lighting impressed you, look up its director of photography. If its spaces were especially memorable, check the production design credit. That small step opens up a different route to discovery from following the cast alone.

Try noting down one name at the end of your next film and finding another production they worked on. The credits stop being a farewell when they become the start of your next film.
