Start with a story
An extensive filmography does not mean you have to start with the first film. Volver offers one way into Pedro Almodóvar’s cinema: the 2006 film brings together family ties, secrets and women who respond in different ways to whatever life puts in their path.
Sony Pictures’ official introduction describes it as a tribute to women and their ability to carry on. From there, leave room for your own experience: notice a conversation, a room or a shift in tone rather than searching for a definitive interpretation.
Follow the thread at your own pace
All About My Mother won the Oscar for Foreign Language Film in 2000. Three years later, Almodóvar won Original Screenplay for Talk to Her. These are useful points of reference, not a ranking that tells us which film should move us most.
For a rewarding double bill, choose two films and watch for what changes between them. The colours, the silences and the way a character is introduced can all be starting points. Watching films also means learning which details stay with us after the credits.
